Delhi Metro's New Line to Connect Vaishali & Gokulpuri, Two More Metro Corridors in Ghaziabad

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for a new metro line. This proposed corridor will be around 16 kilometres long and will connect Vaishali, the last station on the Blue Line, to Gokulpuri in northeast Delhi.

The route will pass through Hindon Civil Terminal, which is considered the second airport of the Delhi-NCR region.

Delhi Metro's New Line

The planned metro line is expected to have seven stations, covering areas such as Sahibabad, Mohan Nagar, Pasunda, Hindon Civil Terminal, and Gagan Vihar. Officials said that this proposal is part of the Phase 5 metro expansion plan. Earlier, DMRC had suggested 18 new metro projects in Delhi-NCR, including three in Ghaziabad. Based on this, GDA has now requested a DPR specifically for the Vaishali-Gokulpuri corridor, which is expected to be submitted in the next couple of months.

Initially, DMRC had proposed a shorter 12-13 km line connecting Gokulpuri to Arthala. However, GDA wants to extend the route further to improve connectivity for more than five lakh residents living in areas like Indirapuram, Vasundhara, and Vaishali.

Currently, Hindon Civil Terminal is about five kilometres away from the nearest metro stations, Dilshad Garden and Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar on the Red Line. Although the Sahibabad RRTS station provides a fast travel option, many people still depend on autos and cabs to reach the terminal.

Metro Corridors in Ghaziabad

Apart from this project, two more metro corridors have been proposed in Ghaziabad. One is a three-kilometre extension from Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda to Ghaziabad railway station. The other is a five-kilometre link between Noida Electronic City and Sahibabad, which will cover areas like Indirapuram and Vasundhara. Together, these three projects will add about 25 kilometres to the metro network and may cost around Rs 7,500 crore. Funding had been a major issue earlier, but now there is hope as the central government has asked for DPRs, which could help secure financial support.
