Delhi International Airport's third runway, Runway 11R/29L, has started operations from September 20 after remaining closed for almost seven months for major rehabilitation and strengthening work. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the airport's private operator, confirmed the success of the rehabilitation process, and all required regulatory approvals are now in place.

Although Delhi Airport's 3rd Runway was commissioned in 2008, the rehabilitation project started in February this year and involved extensive strengthening and upgrading of the runway to improve operational safety, efficiency, resilience and the airport's long-term capacity. Before its closure for the upgrade, the runway had remained in continuous service for 17 years. However, it had undergone regular maintenance, including minor rehabilitation work in 2017, according to DIAL.
Delhi Airport's Runway Upgradation Process
The upgraded runway has completed all necessary inspections, validations, and regulatory clearances and is now ready to return to service. The rehabilitation included several major airside infrastructure improvements such as resurfacing the runway, permanently displacing the threshold of Runway 29L, and constructing a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1).
The project also included upgrades to the airfield ground lighting system, pavement strengthening, and improvements to related civil and electrical infrastructure.
DIAL is a joint venture between an infrastructure consortium led by the GMR Group and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
As Delhi airport is the busiest airport in the country and handles more than 1,300 flight movements, including arrivals and departures, with its four runways, this upgradation and rehabilitation will help the airport handle an increased number of passengers per year. Moreover, they are expected to improve runway efficiency, optimise aircraft movement, reduce runway occupancy time, and further strengthen the airport's operational reliability, according to DIAL.
