As winter approaches, Delhi residents are increasingly worried about air pollution. The city is preparing for another challenging season with expected high pollution levels. The Atishi-led government has announced measures to combat this issue, including a ban on firecrackers and possibly implementing the Odd-Even traffic scheme. Will this festive season be free of crackers?

The Delhi government, led by Atishi, plans to ban firecrackers again this year to curb pollution during festivities. This follows last year's similar move. However, the ban is not yet in effect.
Traffic Control Measures
Another strategy to reduce air pollution is the Odd-Even traffic rule. This system restricts vehicles based on their registration numbers. On odd-numbered days, only vehicles with odd-ending numbers can drive; even-numbered days allow those with even-ending numbers. Reducing traffic congestion is crucial for improving air quality in a large city like Delhi.
The government has also reached out to the Union Environment Minister about using artificial rain as a last resort if pollution becomes unmanageable. This measure would be considered only when other efforts fail.
Construction and Dust Control
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has warned construction agencies to comply with pollution guidelines by October 7 or face strict actions. Construction sites over 500 meters must register on the government portal as part of anti-pollution efforts.
The government will deploy 85 road-sweeping machines and 500 water-spraying machines across Delhi to control dust levels. Additionally, 200 mobile anti-smog guns will address vehicle emissions and construction-related pollution.
Comprehensive Winter Action Plan
This year, Delhi's government has devised a detailed 21-point Winter Action Plan targeting various pollution sources. For the first time, drones will monitor pollution hotspots, enabling real-time identification of major sources.
A dust control campaign will begin on October 7, focusing on construction sites and open spaces prone to dust pollution.
These initiatives underscore Delhi's ongoing battle against severe air pollution, particularly during winter when air quality often reaches hazardous levels. By enforcing these measures, the government aims to mitigate effects and safeguard public health.
