A significant weather event is developing in the Bay of Bengal, with a depression likely to transform into a severe cyclonic storm. This storm, named Cyclone Remal, is expected to make landfall between West Bengal's Sagar Island and Bangladesh's Khepupara around midnight on Sunday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), wind speeds at landfall could reach between 100 to 120 km per hour.

Cyclone Remal is currently located over the central Bay of Bengal, about 800 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh) and 810 km south of Canning (West Bengal). The storm is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 25 and further into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday night, moving northwards.
2. Impact on Weather:
The cyclone will bring heavy to very heavy rain to the coastal districts of West Bengal on May 26 and 27. This includes places like Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, and Howrah.
3. Expected Rainfall and Wind:
The IMD has warned of gusty winds reaching 90 to 100 kmph in South 24 Parganas and 80 to 90 kmph in Purba Medinipur on May 26 and 27. In Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, and Howrah, wind speeds could reach 60 to 70 kmph.
4. Effect on Other Regions:
Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected in north and south Odisha from May 25. Rainfall is also likely in Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26. By May 27 and 28, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura will also experience light to moderate rainfall.
5. Sea Conditions and Warnings:
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the north Bay of Bengal until the morning of May 27 due to the rough sea conditions.

The North Indian Ocean is currently very warm, with sea surface temperatures of 30 to 31°C, providing the ideal conditions to strengthen the cyclone. An IMD official mentioned that these temperatures have the potential to supercharge the cyclone, although monsoon winds over the Peninsular region might influence its development.
7. Impact on Elections:
Despite the approaching cyclone, the IMD has predicted no adverse impact on the sixth phase of polling in the Lok Sabha election on May 25.
