A weather system identified over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the north Andaman Sea is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by October 23, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The storm, named Cyclone Dana, is forecasted to impact the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal later this week. While the exact point of landfall is still uncertain, predictions suggest it could hit near Puri.

The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha starting from October 23. Coastal regions may experience as much as 30 cm of rain between October 24 and 25. In response to this, orange and red warnings have been announced for several districts in Odisha and West Bengal, signaling the likelihood of significant rain, thunderstorms, and rough sea conditions.
Cyclone Dana is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm once it develops. Squally winds of 35-45 km/h, with gusts up to 55 km/h, are forecasted for the Bay of Bengal between October 21 and 22. These wind speeds are expected to increase to 60 km/h by October 23 and could reach up to 120 km/h between the night of October 24 and the morning of October 25.
In light of these conditions, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid sea ventures from October 23 to 26, as the seas are expected to become extremely rough. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local emergency operation centers to ensure safety and preparedness.

Cyclone Dana poses a serious threat not only to coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal but also to parts of north Andhra Pradesh and even neighboring Bangladesh. The IMD and local authorities are urging residents to stay informed about weather updates and follow any safety measures issued to minimize risks during the storm.
As Cyclone Dana approaches, authorities are on high alert, focusing on minimizing its impact on the eastern coast of India. It is crucial for communities in these regions to stay prepared and follow all official advisories to stay safe during this upcoming natural event.
