Cold Wave Grips Jammu And Kashmir Freezing Dal Lake And Boosting Tourism

A cold wave has enveloped Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the freezing of Dal Lake and a significant drop in temperatures. The scenic beauty has led to a rise in winter tourism, with various regions seeing increased visitor numbers ahead of the holiday season.

As the cold wave tightens its grip on Northern India, Jammu and Kashmir are covered in a blanket of snow, presenting a picturesque view reminiscent of a winter paradise. Notably, the Dal Lake in Srinagar has transformed into a sheet of ice, capturing the attention of many, as temperatures in the region nosedive to a frigid minus 7.3 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department has highlighted the severe drop in temperature, marking a significant moment in the season's weather patterns.

A video circulated by ANI vividly depicts the Dal Lake, renowned for its Shikara rides, now frozen solid on a chilly Tuesday morning. The sight of the iconic lake, now stilled by ice, underscores the intense cold wave sweeping across the area.

Tourism Boost in the Winter Wonderland

The allure of snow has led to a surge in tourism, with places like Doda and Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir, turning into a magnet for visitors seeking the serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes. Similarly, Himachal Pradesh has been receiving continuous snowfall, echoing the weather patterns in Jammu and Kashmir. Popular destinations such as Manali and Shimla are now bustling with tourists, keen to experience the enchanting winter scenery.

Snowfall across various parts of Kashmir, alongside rainfall in Delhi and parts of Rajasthan, has intensified the cold wave conditions throughout the region. Regions like Kashmir, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, and the upper reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, and Sirmaur districts have all reported snowfall, adding to the winter cheer, especially with Christmas around the corner.

Plunging Temperatures and Its Effects

The plummeting temperatures have had a tangible impact on daily life, with water supply lines freezing over and ice forming on several water bodies. Srinagar recorded a chilling minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Monday night, with Pahalgam and Gulmarg experiencing even lower temperatures. The village of Konibal, situated in the Pampore region, reported the valley's lowest temperature at minus 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Despite the current cold spell, the weather forecast does not predict any major wet conditions for the coming two weeks. However, light snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, with the weather likely remaining dry for the next few days. From late December 27 to the morning of December 28, light rain and snow are anticipated over the plains of Jammu and the higher reaches of the Chenab Valley and Pirpanjal Range.

This winter season has transformed Kashmir into a wonderland, drawing visitors from near and far. The freezing of Dal Lake and the snow-covered landscapes offer a serene and spectacular view, marking this winter as a memorable one for the region.
