Chennai rain updates: Tamil Nadu witnessed an intense bout of weather as several cities, including Chennai, were drenched in heavy rainfall on Sunday evening. The unexpected downpour resulted in widespread waterlogging, severely affecting the daily hustle and causing extensive traffic jams. In response to the deluge, local authorities declared a holiday for schools and colleges in multiple districts, ensuring the safety of students and faculty.

Education Institutions Closed Due to Weather Woes
In the wake of severe weather conditions, educational institutions across Nagapattinam, Kilvelur Taluk, Viluppuram, and Cuddalore districts have been shut. The decision was extended to schools in Ranipet, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai for January 8. Students and parents were informed of the closures as officials acted to prevent any risk that might come from the torrential rains and subsequent waterlogging.

Commuters Bear the Brunt of Unrelenting Rains
The rains did not spare commuters who faced the brunt of nature's fury. Major routes in Chennai were choked with traffic as the roads turned into rivulets. The continued rainfall has made travel within the city a challenge, with many seeking alternative routes or postponing their travel plans to avoid being stuck in gridlocks.

Rainfall Alert: Tamil Nadu Braces for More Showers
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has sounded an alert, predicting rains across various districts of Tamil Nadu for the next seven days. The forecast includes heavy rains for isolated regions over ten districts on Sunday. As a precaution, areas near water bodies have been cordoned off amidst flash flood warnings, and tourists have been barred from bathing near waterbodies like the Old Courtallam Falls.
India Meteorological Department's Extended Forecast
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), residents can expect the rains to persist for a week in districts including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and others. Following Sunday's downpour, lighter rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are anticipated. Notably, Nagapattinam recorded the highest rainfall, emphasizing the severity of the weather system affecting the region.
The recent rainfall is a continuation of extreme weather events that have plagued Tamil Nadu over the past year. The state is still reeling from the effects of Cyclone Michaung, which hit Chennai hard, causing extensive damage and financial losses. With the latest forecasts, the government and citizens are on high alert to mitigate the impact of the ongoing monsoonal spells.
