Chennai Metro's New Extension: CMRL has completed the DPR for the Light House to Madras High Court Line

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed metro extension from Light House to Madras High Court and is expected to submit it to the Tamil Nadu government for approval. The report was prepared by Systra MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd., which was awarded the contract in June last year after CMRL invited bids for the project.

The proposed extension will cover a distance of 5.69 km and will be completely underground. Four new metro stations have been planned along the route: Ezhilagam, Island Grounds, Secretariat, and Madras High Court. The project is estimated to cost around ₹4,300 crore.

Light House Station Under Chennai Metro Phase II

The Light House station, currently being developed under Chennai Metro's 118.9-km Phase II project, will serve as an important terminal station. It is part of Corridor 4, the 26.1-km East-West corridor connecting Poonamallee and Light House. The corridor passes through several major areas, including Valasaravakkam, Vadapalani, Kodambakkam, T. Nagar, Nandanam, Boat Club, Alwarpet, and Thirumayilai.

How will this Extension Benefit Public Transport in the City?

Officials believe that if the extension receives approval from both the State and Central governments and becomes operational, it will significantly improve public transport in the city. The new stretch is expected to benefit lakhs of commuters by providing direct metro connectivity to important government offices and public locations.

The Secretariat and Ezhilagam employ a large number of government staff, while Island Grounds is a popular venue for exhibitions and public events. Metro access to these areas is expected to make travel easier and faster for daily commuters and visitors.

The line has been planned as an underground route because it will continue from the existing underground section of Corridor 4.

Prasanna Kumar, an employee at Ezhilagam, welcomed the proposal. He said he often travels between Ezhilagam and the Secretariat and currently depends on buses. According to him, metro connectivity would make commuting much more convenient, save travel time, and benefit many employees and visitors travelling to these important government locations.
