Chennai Metro Phase II Got Approved With 3 New Corridors Connecting 128 Stations; Check Names

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. This long-awaited phase will add three major corridors to the city's metro system. Approved corridors connect North to South and East to the West of Chennai. These new lines will span a total of 118.9 kilometers and include 128 stations. With a budget of Rs. 63,246 crore, the project is expected to be completed by 2027. Once finished, Chennai will have a total metro network of 173 kilometers, significantly improving the city's public transport.

Chennai Metro Phase II Got Approved

Chennai's traffic congestion is a major challenge, with many roads frequently clogged with vehicles. The extended metro network is expected to ease this problem by reducing dependence on road transport. With fewer cars on the road, traffic in crowded areas will flow more smoothly. Commuters will save time, experience safer travel, and enjoy a more pleasant journey. This shift will help reduce road traffic, making everyday travel less stressful.

Expanding the Metro Network

The three new corridors will bring metro services to key areas across Chennai, connecting industrial, commercial, residential, and institutional hubs. The corridors are:

Corridor (i): Madhavaram to SIPCOT - 45.8 kilometers with 50 stations.

Corridor (ii): Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass - 26.1 kilometers with 30 stations.

Corridor (iii): Madhavaram to Sholinganallur - 47 kilometers with 48 stations.

The Corridors of Phase-II connect North to South and East to West of Chennai passing through the major influence areas at Madhavaram, Perambur, Thirumayilai, Adyar, Sholinganallur, SIPCOT, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Porur, Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, St. Thomas Mount connecting large number of industrial, commercial, residential and institutional establishments. It will also improve access to rapidly developing areas, making daily commutes easier and faster.

Environmental and Economic Impact

One of the key advantages of the metro expansion is its positive impact on the environment. Since the metro is electric-powered, it offers a cleaner alternative to cars and buses, reducing the city's carbon emissions. This step toward greener public transport will help Chennai create a more sustainable urban environment.

Economically, the metro will save workers time by cutting down on their travel hours, allowing them to be more productive at work. The improved connectivity will likely attract more businesses to the city, driving economic growth. The new metro routes will make it easier for employees to reach their workplaces, especially in areas like Sholinganallur, which has a large IT workforce.

Boosting Infrastructure and Development

Phase II will connect North to South and East to West Chennai, covering key locations like Madhavaram, Perambur, and Sholinganallur. Many of these areas are home to industries, institutions, and growing residential neighborhoods. The new metro lines will provide a reliable transport alternative for the city's workforce, particularly for those commuting to Chennai's expanding IT hubs.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase II is a big step towards transforming the city's transportation system. With nearly 119 kilometers of new lines, this project will make commuting more convenient, reduce traffic congestion, and help protect the environment. Set for completion by 2027, Phase II will position Chennai as one of India's leading cities in terms of metro infrastructure, offering a modern and efficient public transport option for residents and visitors alike.
