The Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project has reached a major milestone with the introduction of its first driverless trainset. This trainset has been supplied by Alstom, a French multinational company known for its smart and sustainable mobility solutions. This development marks a crucial moment in improving urban transportation in Chennai.
Alstom has been a key player in delivering advanced trainsets that support India's 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. These new trains are being built at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The project, worth 124 million euros, not only includes the supply of the trainsets but also involves training Chennai Metro personnel in operations and maintenance.
The new driverless trains will run along a 26-kilometer corridor, connecting Poonamallee Bypass with Light House through 28 stations. The corridor includes both elevated and underground sections, part of the larger Phase II expansion of the Chennai Metro. In February 2024, Alstom secured an order to manufacture 36 of these advanced trains, each with three cars. This initiative is expected to greatly improve the commuting experience in Chennai by offering a sustainable, efficient, and comfortable mode of transport.
Alstom has a long-standing relationship with Chennai Metro, having supplied 208 metro cars for the Phase I project since 2010. The delivery of the first driverless trainset for Phase II highlights Alstom's ongoing role in shaping the future of transportation in Chennai. Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, expressed pride in supporting Chennai's transformation. He emphasized that these driverless trains will not only improve passenger experiences but also contribute to sustainable mobility by reducing emissions and easing road traffic.
The design of these trains was done in Bengaluru, while the manufacturing took place in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Loison reiterated Alstom's commitment to partnering with India to revolutionize mass transit systems and promote a cleaner, greener future.
