Commuters using Chennai's suburban railway network are likely to experience some inconvenience on July 5 and July 12, the next two Sundays, as Southern Railway has cancelled 41 EMU train services. The cancellations are necessary to carry out important engineering and maintenance work between Chennai Beach and Tambaram.

Chennai EMU Trains to be Affected
According to Southern Railway, a line and power block have been scheduled on the Chennai Egmore-Villupuram section from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm on both days. During these five hours, railway staff will carry out engineering works to improve the safety and reliability of the railway infrastructure.
Due to the maintenance work, several suburban EMU trains running between Chennai Beach and Tambaram, Chengalpet, Arakkonam, and Tirumalpur in both directions will remain fully cancelled. Passengers who usually travel on these routes during the affected hours are advised to check train schedules before starting their journey and make alternate travel plans if required.
Why are the Temporary Changes Made?
Southern Railway said these temporary cancellations are essential to complete the engineering work safely and efficiently. Such maintenance activities are carried out regularly to ensure the smooth operation of suburban train services and maintain railway tracks, signalling systems, and overhead power lines.
To reduce inconvenience for passengers, Southern Railway has made special travel arrangements. During the block period, special passenger trains will operate between Tambaram and Chengalpet, Tambaram and Arakkonam, and Tambaram and Tirumalpur. These trains will run at scheduled intervals to provide connectivity on the affected routes and help passengers continue their journeys.
Advisory for Passengers
Railway officials have requested commuters to cooperate during the maintenance work and plan their travel accordingly. They also advised passengers to check the latest train timings and service updates before leaving home.
