Travelers flying with IndiGo from Chennai Airport now have a new convenience at their disposal. The airport has introduced its first self-baggage drop facility, aimed to streamline the check-in process and reduce wait times. This initiative is currently exclusive to IndiGo passengers, a leading airline that services around 60 percent of the airport's passenger traffic.

Located in Terminal 1 (T1), the facility boasts eight self-baggage drop kiosks, with four of these kiosks—situated at counters 60-63—dedicated to IndiGo. Following over a month of successful trials, airport officials decided to make the service operational for the public. The move is part of a broader effort to enhance passenger experiences and efficiency at the airport.
Other airlines, including Akasa and SpiceJet, will also have the opportunity to integrate this system into their services in the future. During its initial week of operation, the self-baggage drop facility witnessed a positive response from both frequent flyers and first-time travelers, with an average of 100-125 passengers using the service daily. This preference highlights a growing trend towards self-service options in travel, allowing passengers to avoid long queues and manage their baggage more independently.
Support is readily available near the kiosks, with airport staff members assisting passengers in using the facility efficiently. This service proves especially beneficial for those adhering to the permissible baggage weight limits, facilitating a smoother boarding process.
Looking ahead, Chennai Airport plans to expand this convenient service. Officials have announced the installation of an additional eight self-baggage drop kiosks in Terminal 4 (T4), another domestic terminal, within the next two months. This expansion underscores the airport's commitment to leveraging technology for improving passenger experiences and operational efficiencies.
