Cambodia Angkor Air, the national flag carrier of Cambodia, is set to initiate a groundbreaking direct flight service between Phnom Penh and New Delhi. Starting June 16, this connection will operate four times a week, marking the first direct air link between the two countries. This new route is aimed at capitalizing on the rapidly growing Indian outbound tourism market, with future plans to expand the frequency to daily flights and extend connections to Siem Reap and potentially to Mumbai.
New Opportunities for Indian Tourists
Eng Molina, the airline's Chief Commercial Officer, expressed optimism about the demand for these flights, highlighting Indians' growing interest in exploring new destinations like Cambodia. The airline is also considering codeshare agreements with Indian carriers to tap into feeder markets across India. This initiative is part of Cambodia Angkor Air's broader strategy to promote Cambodia's diverse attractions, including its beautiful beaches, eco-tourism spots, vibrant cities, and shopping experiences.
Promoting Cambodia's Rich Heritage
Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism is preparing to launch a promotional campaign in India to showcase the country's offerings beyond the famed Angkor Wat. With 34,016 Indian tourists visiting Cambodia in 2022, there's a positive outlook for increased travel interest. Travel packages being developed range from short three-night stays for weekend travel to extended 15-night tours, aiming to attract both leisure and MICE segments.
Local tourism officials and agents are keen on promoting Cambodia's cultural heritage sites, such as the Temple of Preah Vihear, mangrove forests, river cruises, and bird-watching locales like Prek Toal.
Benefits of Direct Flights
Anil Kalsi, Vice President of the Travel Agents Federation of India, pointed out that direct flights will make travel more affordable by reducing the need for connecting flights. He suggested that Cambodia Angkor Air could further enhance the appeal by offering convenient connections to Siem Reap from Phnom Penh, allowing travelers to experience both cities seamlessly. Additionally, he mentioned that visa waivers for Indian tourists could significantly boost travel demand.
In a move to expand its international presence, Cambodia Angkor Air also plans to start thrice-a-week direct flights to Singapore by the year's end. This expansion signifies the airline's commitment to connecting Cambodia with key global destinations, offering travelers more options to explore the rich culture and scenic beauty of Cambodia.
The introduction of direct flights between Phnom Penh and New Delhi by Cambodia Angkor Air is a significant development in international air travel, promising to enhance tourism and cultural exchanges between Cambodia and India. This initiative not only makes travel more accessible but also opens up new avenues for exploring the diverse landscapes and rich heritage of Cambodia.
