India is making rapid progress in revolutionizing rail travel with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project already under construction. Following this milestone, the government is planning to connect more cities with high-speed trains, including Delhi, which is set to have three routes under the proposed expansion.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project, spanning 508 kilometers, is India's first bullet train project. This corridor will pass through 12 major stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad, and is being developed with technical and financial support from Japan.
The construction is progressing steadily:
- - Pier Foundations Completed: 336 km
- - Pier Construction Done: 331 km
- - Girders Cast: 260 km
- - Girders Launched: 225 km
- - Under-Sea Tunnel Work: Ongoing for the 21-km stretch
This ambitious project is a step towards modernizing India's rail infrastructure.
Delhi's High-Speed Rail Plans
The government has taken steps to bring high-speed rail to Delhi, with plans for three major corridors:
1. Delhi-Varanasi
2. Delhi-Ahmedabad
3. Delhi-Amritsar
These corridors are part of a broader plan to expand high-speed rail across the country. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are being prepared by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for these routes.
Proposed Future Corridors
In addition to Delhi's routes, the government has outlined other high-speed rail corridors:
- - Mumbai-Nagpur
- - Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad
- - Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore
- - Varanasi-Howrah
The Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Howrah routes will pass through Uttar Pradesh, further enhancing connectivity in the state.
Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized in the Rajya Sabha that these projects are still in the planning phase. Their approval depends on several factors, including the outcome of DPRs, economic feasibility, and funding availability.
The expansion of the bullet train network aims to reduce travel time, provide faster and more efficient travel options, and boost economic growth. With Delhi emerging as a central hub in this ambitious plan, the future of high-speed rail travel in India looks promising.
As the government continues to push forward with these transformative projects, the vision of a nationwide high-speed rail network is steadily becoming a reality.
