Budget 2023-24: Development Of 50 Small Airports To Increase The Connectivity

Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, stated today, 1st February 2023 that 50 new airports, water aerodromes, and heliports would be built to increase regional aviation connectivity. FM n made the declaration when outlining the Union's 2023-2024 budget.

The government has been implementing many programs in recent years, particularly the Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) project, to improve regional air connectivity.

In the past six years, UDAN flights have carried about 1.15 billion passengers. The total number of tourism routes has grown to 59 under the UDAN scheme, which aims to facilitate/stimulate regional air connectivity by making it inexpensive. Out of which, currently 51 of these routes are operational.

Additionally, she mentioned that 100 essential transportation infrastructure projects have been identified for last and first-mile connections for the ports, steel, coals, fertilizer, as well as food grains industries. They will be taken care of initially with an investment of INR 75,000 crores, including INR 15,000 crores from private sources, she stated.

In addition, President Droupadi Murmu noted that India has grown to be the 3rd largest aviation market in the whole world during her opening remarks to the joint session of Parliament on Tuesday, 31st January 2023. She added that the country's aviation industry is expanding quickly, with the number of airports rising from 74 in 2014 to 147 now.

Earlier, Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, observed that since 2014, the no. of airports in India has increased by 100%. Before the release of the Budget, the Economic Survey stated that India's Civil Aviation sector has "great potential" because of rising middle-class demand, higher disposable incomes, & favorable demographics, while the aviation industry has recovered since the lifting of the restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The UDAN scheme, which has significantly improved regional connectivity by opening airports in the hinterland, was included among the several factors that are supporting the civil aviation sector in the survey for 2022-23, which was presented to Parliament on 31st January, Tuesday, 2023.

According to the report, air travel has increased again as a result of the international relaxation of travel restrictions and the control of Covid-19 outbreaks. While air traffic fell by 54% and passenger traffic by 66% respectively in FY21, there was an improvement in those statistics the following fiscal year.
