Bengaluru's Namma Metro is preparing to introduce platform screen doors (PSDs), and a trial model has already been set up at the MG Road station, according to officials. These doors will be installed on stations along the upcoming Pink Line, which runs 21.26 km from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. With

most of the civil construction nearly finished, BMRCL is now focusing on track laying and installing essential systems, including PSDs.
Why Are the New Designs Implemented?
Platform screen doors are designed to open only when a train stops at the correct position to prevent accidents such as passengers falling or jumping onto the tracks, something that has happened several times in the city recently. For underground stations, PSDs also help maintain better temperature control by reducing the flow of air between the platform area and the tunnels to improve comfort and save energy.
BMRCL's Move
While cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai already have PSDs at some of their metro stations, Bengaluru currently has none across its 83 operational stations. To move forward, BMRCL has placed a full-size mockup of the PSD, supplied by subcontractor Panasonic from China, at the MG Road station for testing. A senior BMRCL official said that once the trials are complete and approvals are received, installation will begin at all 12 underground stations on the Pink Line. This entire process is expected to take around six months.
Features of the New Design
Each platform screen door will be about 2.15 metres tall, while platform screen gates (PSGs) will be 1.4 metres in height. Both will cover the full 128-metre length of a six-coach platform. The estimated cost is around ₹9 crore per station.
In June 2024, Alstom Transport won a €96.2-million contract to supply and set up a fully automated CBTC signalling system for both the Pink and Blue lines. This work also requires around six months for installation and integration. The Pink Line will open in two stages: the Kalena Agrahara-Tavarekere stretch by May 2026, and the Dairy Circle-Nagawara section by December 2026.
