BEML Wins ₹414 Crore Order for Six Driverless Trains on Bengaluru Yellow Line, Expanding Fleet

BEML has received a new order worth ₹414 crore to supply six driverless trainsets for Namma Metro's Yellow Line. This is the second modification to the company's original August 2023 contract, in which BEML had agreed to supply 53 trainsets for Bengaluru Metro. That base order, worth ₹3,177 crore, was

the biggest train procurement in Namma Metro's history. It included 37 trains for the Blue Line and 16 for the Pink Line.

Additional Pink Line Trains

Earlier in March, BMRCL issued the first variation order for seven additional Pink Line trains at a cost of ₹405 crore. A variation order allows the metro authority to make changes to an existing contract, such as adding more trains, altering designs, modifying timelines, or revising costs. All these orders include up to 15 years of maintenance. The second variation order, given now, is the most expensive of the three.

Latest Order of BMRCL

Under the latest order, BMRCL will pay ₹11.5 crore per coach. This is higher than the earlier rates, ₹9.99 crore per coach under the base order and ₹9.64 crore under the first variation order. With this addition, BEML will now supply a total of 66 trains (396 coaches) for Namma Metro. BEML has earlier supplied 57 trains for the Purple and Green lines.

New Bengaluru's Coaches

The new Bengaluru-designed coaches will be built using strong Austenitic stainless steel and will feature modern systems such as roof-mounted air-conditioners, IP-based announcement and information systems, CCTV surveillance, LCD route maps, and automatic doors that work in sync with platform screen doors.

Back in December 2019, BMRCL had awarded CRRC (China) a ₹1,578-crore contract to supply 36 trains, including 15 for the Yellow Line. But due to difficulties in manufacturing in India, CRRC partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems, and so far, only six Yellow Line trains have been delivered. Due to high ridership needs, BMRCL has now turned to BEML for more trains.

Bengaluru's Yellow Line Trains

Yellow Line trains will run on Siemens signalling, while Pink and Blue Line trains use Alstom. BEML is expected to supply Yellow Line trains only after completing Pink and Blue Line deliveries, likely starting in 2027. The company has also faced delays, for example, the Pink Line prototype, earlier due in June 2025, has been postponed to December because of equipment shortages and delayed testing.
