Bengaluru's Peenya Flyover Ready For Heavy Vehicles After 2 Years

After being closed for over two years, the Peenya flyover in Bengaluru has reopened for heavy vehicles, following extensive repairs by the NHAI to address corrosion issues.

The Peenya flyover in Bengaluru, which links the city to central and north Karnataka, reopened for heavy vehicles after being closed for over two years. The closure in December 2021 was due to corrosion in prestressed cables across three spans. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) conducted extensive repairs and tests before reopening.

Heavy vehicles can now use the 4.2-km flyover along Tumakuru road, but with restrictions. Traffic police have mandated that heavy vehicles are not allowed from Friday 6 am to Saturday 6 am each week until further notice. This measure aims to manage traffic flow and ensure safety.

Load Testing and Repairs

Before reopening, NHAI conducted a rigorous load test on the Peenya flyover. Eight trucks, each carrying 32 tonnes, were driven continuously for 48 hours on the flyover. This test was crucial to ensure the structure's stability and readiness for public transport vehicles.

In preparation for these tests, around 240 prestressed cables across 120 pillars were replaced. These repairs were essential to address the corrosion issues that initially caused the closure.

Impact on Commuters

The reopening of the flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion significantly. It serves as a vital link between Bengaluru and various districts in central and north Karnataka, facilitating smoother travel for heavy vehicles.

However, commuters should be aware of the ongoing restrictions during weekends. The traffic police's decision to limit heavy vehicle access from Friday morning to Saturday morning is a preventive measure aimed at maintaining road safety and managing traffic effectively.

The Peenya flyover's reopening marks a significant milestone in improving Bengaluru's infrastructure. With thorough testing and repairs completed, it is now ready to serve its purpose once again, connecting key regions efficiently.

This development highlights the importance of regular maintenance and timely interventions in ensuring the longevity and safety of critical infrastructure projects like flyovers.
