Bengaluru's Namma Metro Phase 3-A: Bridging Key Areas With New Connectivity

The Namma Metro Phase 3-A project aims to enhance connectivity between Hebbal and Sarjapur in Bengaluru. With a budget of Rs 15,600 crore, it proposes 28 stations, including 11 underground, and is currently under financial scrutiny.

The Urban Development Department (UDD) has recently endorsed the Phase 3-A project of Namma Metro, aiming to bridge Hebbal and Sarjapur over a span of more than 37 kilometers. This significant development is set to undergo a financial scrutiny by the Finance Department, as per a News 18 report, to gauge its impact on the state's before it gets the Cabinet's green light. The detailed project report (DPR) is now under review, a crucial step before final approval. With this new metro line, the connectivity between Bengaluru's technological core and the Kempegowda International Airport will be significantly enhanced.

The proposed metro line, which is to include 28 stations with 11 underground, is a blend of elevated and subterranean sections, promising a new era of transit in Bengaluru. It is designed to serve pivotal areas such as Iblur, Koramangala, Shanthinagar, Town Hall, and Mehkri Circle. An innovative feature of this project is the planned elevated double-decker road stretching from Sarjapur to Koramangala. However, this addition requires separate funding since the DPR is focused solely on metro development, and the central government's financial support does not extend to road infrastructure.

Concerns have been raised by metro supporters regarding the potential delays the addition of a double-decker road could cause to this crucial transit project. Despite these worries, the central government gave its nod to the Phase 3 project on September 27, which includes expansions along the Outer Ring Road (JP Nagar-Kempapura) and Magadi Road. This approval marks a significant milestone towards the commencement of the project, with a budget allocation of Rs 15,600 crore.

In discussions with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), a tunnel road alongside the Sarjapur-Hebbal metro line has been proposed, indicating a comprehensive approach to enhance the city's infrastructure. With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the helm of the Finance Department, expectations are high for swift Cabinet clearance following the finance approval. This project is not just an upgrade to the city's transport network but also a strategic link connecting key urban spaces and fostering greater accessibility.

As Bengaluru braces for this transformative project, it marks a significant step forward in addressing the city's growing transit and infrastructure needs. The Phase 3-A project of Namma Metro, with its extensive coverage and innovative design, is poised to redefine urban mobility in Bengaluru, enhancing connectivity and making travel more efficient for its residents.
