Bengaluru residents may soon have to spend more on their daily travel, as Namma Metro fares are likely to increase every year starting February. The proposed hike follows a recommendation by the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), which has suggested an annual fare increase of up to five percent. If implemented,

this move will further raise the cost of Metro travel for thousands of regular commuters.
Proposal of Namma Metro's Fare Hike
This proposal comes just a year after Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) introduced a major fare revision in February 2025. That hike increased ticket prices by as much as 71 percent, making Namma Metro the costliest Metro system in India. Many commuters say another increase will only add to their financial burden, especially for those who depend on the Metro daily.
Criticism Against the Proposal From Passengers
The idea of yearly fare hikes has drawn strong criticism from passengers. Several commuters want public transportation, which should be affordable for everyone, is slowly becoming too expensive. Vinod Kumar, a daily Metro user, said Metro travel is supposed to help common people, not become a luxury service. He added that another hike after last year's steep increase feels unfair.
BMRCL had earlier revised fares based on the FFC's recommendations, which are legally binding under the Metro Railways Act. The same rules allow BMRCL to revise fares annually until a new committee is formed. However, commuters argue that better services do not match higher fares. Problems like overcrowded trains, slow expansion of new routes, and poor last-mile connectivity continue to affect passengers.
Another commuter, Venkatesh, pointed out that calling the Metro a premium service does not make sense when trains are packed during peak hours. Mobility expert Satya Arikutharm also criticised the proposal, saying commuters are already paying more due to flaws in the fare calculation.
Many fear that repeated fare hikes without service improvements may push people back onto busy roads, increasing traffic and travel stress.
