Uber India has introduced a groundbreaking service called 'Uber Moto Women' in Bengaluru, designed exclusively for women. This unique initiative connects female passengers with female drivers, aiming to enhance safety and comfort during rides. It is the first service of its kind globally by Uber, marking a major step toward women-friendly transportation. Uber plans to extend this service to other cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad, offering more women a secure and reliable commute option.

Safety Features for Women
Responding to growing concerns about women's safety, Uber has integrated several advanced safety measures into the 'Uber Moto Women' service. Riders can share their trip details in real-time with up to five trusted contacts, ensuring their loved ones can track their journey. The service also anonymizes phone numbers to protect users' personal information. Additionally, Uber's RideCheck feature detects unexpected stops or route changes, adding another layer of security. A 24/7 specialized safety helpline is available for priority support, addressing any concerns or emergencies women riders may face during their trips.
Empowering Female Drivers
'Uber Moto Women' also empowers female drivers by allowing them to choose whether they wish to accept rides exclusively from female passengers or from all riders. This gives drivers more control over their work environment, promoting a safer and more inclusive space for women in the gig economy.
The Growing Bike Taxi Sector
India's bike taxi sector is witnessing rapid growth, with over 280 million rides recorded in 2022 across different platforms. Bengaluru, a major hub for bike taxis, accounts for more than 1 million monthly rides. Despite Rapido dominating the market with a 60% share, the sector continues to expand, presenting a competitive landscape.
Legal Challenges for Bike Taxis
However, challenges remain. The Motor Vehicles Act does not currently recognize motorcycles as vehicles eligible for contract carriage. This has led to bans on bike taxis in several states, sparking protests from three-wheeler and taxi unions who view bike taxis as unfair competition due to their lower costs.
The Union government is considering amending the Motor Vehicles Act to allow motorcycles to serve as "contract carriers." This legal framework could legitimize bike taxis, providing a boost to this cost-effective mode of transportation and transforming urban mobility in India.
With 'Uber Moto Women,' Uber demonstrates its commitment to creating safer travel experiences and supporting women's participation in the transportation sector. This initiative is set to redefine urban commuting while addressing important safety and legal concerns.
