South Western Railway (SWR) has started acquiring land to build a maintenance depot for Vande Bharat sleeper trains in Bengaluru's Thanisandra. The new facility is expected to support the operation and maintenance of the upcoming fleet of overnight Vande Bharat trains in Karnataka.

Bengaluru's Vande Bharat Trains to Get a Maintenance Depot at Thanisandra
According to a notification issued by SWR, around 13.95 hectares of land will be acquired for the project. The depot will be developed at Thanisandra on the Channasandra-Yelahanka railway section. It will serve as a dedicated maintenance centre for Vande Bharat sleeper trains and help improve rail operations in the region.
Thanisandra is an important location as it is close to Manyata Tech Park. The area is also expected to get a railway station on the under-construction Heelalige-Rajanukunte suburban rail corridor. The existing Thanisandra railway station earlier had a ticket booking counter, but it was demolished a few years ago during the Channasandra-Yelahanka railway line doubling project.
Depot Facilities
The proposed depot will include several modern facilities required for train maintenance and operations. These will include stabling lines where trains can be parked, workshops for repairs and servicing, utility services, approach roads, service roads, and other railway infrastructure needed for the smooth functioning of the depot.
Land Acquisition Process
To build the project, SWR plans to acquire 14 privately owned land parcels located in Thanisandra. The railway authorities have invited objections from affected landowners or other stakeholders. Anyone opposing the proposed land acquisition can submit their objections within 30 days of the publication date of the official notification.
How will the New Depot Benefit Bengaluru's Rail Services?
The new depot is expected to play an important role in maintaining Karnataka's future Vande Bharat sleeper trains, which are designed for comfortable overnight travel on long-distance routes. Once completed, the facility will help ensure regular maintenance, improve operational efficiency, and support the expansion of premium rail services from Bengaluru and other parts of the state.
