Karnataka's Minister for Large & Medium Industries, MB Patil, has suggested extending metro services to the upcoming KWIN City near Bengaluru. The plan aims to improve transportation for the Tumakuru Metro line, ensuring it passes through the Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City. This step is expected to help global companies, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and industries that will be set up in KWIN City. The Bengaluru Metro's Green Line extension, which is under a feasibility study, is planned to run from Madavara to Tumakuru, covering 52.4 km.

Recommendation for Bengaluru-Tumakuru Metro Line
Patil has sent his recommendations to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). He has urged them to plan a metro route for the Bengaluru-Tumakuru line through KWIN City along the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR). This move is expected to benefit industrial areas near Nelamangala, as STRR is already supporting the growth of satellite towns. A letter detailing Patil's request has been reviewed by Moneycontrol.
Experts Suggest Alternatives for Better Connectivity
While metro expansion is being considered, some experts believe that improving internal metro connections within Bengaluru is equally important. They suggest that suburban rail extensions could serve districts like Tumakuru more effectively. Tumakuru, which is close to Bengaluru, has been identified as a region that could benefit from rail transport.
The Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE), which is overseen by Patil, is currently working on the Bengaluru suburban rail project. This includes the 25-km Mallige Line from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara. There is also a possibility of extending this line to Tumakuru via Dobbaspet. This could be a more cost-effective and faster alternative to the metro for connecting Tumakuru with Bengaluru.
KWIN City - A New Hub for Development
KWIN City is a massive 2,000-acre project located between Dobbaspet and Doddaballapur along STRR. It is planned to become a center for education, healthcare, and industry. The city is about 50 km from Bengaluru and a 45-minute drive from Kempegowda International Airport. The project aims to accommodate five lakh residents and host top international educational institutions.
To improve transportation within the city, there are also plans for a central monorail system for fast urban transit.
This large-scale development project reflects Karnataka's goal of creating a global hub for knowledge, wellbeing, and innovation. With major international companies and institutions set to establish themselves in KWIN City, metro connectivity would make it an even more attractive destination for investment. The integration of transport projects with urban planning shows a forward-thinking approach, ensuring that cities like KWIN are well-prepared for future growth.
