The southwest monsoon is moving across southern India, bringing widespread rainfall to Karnataka. Due to the increasing intensity of rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several districts in the state.

Karnataka Rain Alert
According to the IMD, heavy to severe rainfall is expected across coastal and interior Karnataka between June 9 and June 11. Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga have been placed under a red alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. Several other districts are under an orange alert, which also warns of significant rain.
The warning comes as the monsoon has advanced further into parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The southwest monsoon is India's main rainy season and usually lasts from June to September. It contributes nearly 70 percent of the country's annual rainfall and plays a vital role in agriculture, drinking water supply, reservoirs, and hydropower generation.
Bengaluru Rain Alert
As the monsoon strengthens over the Arabian Sea, Karnataka is among the first states to witness a major increase in rainfall. Bengaluru is expected to receive heavy showers and thunderstorms over the next few days, followed by cloudy weather and occasional rain throughout the week. The rainfall is also likely to bring temperatures down, providing relief from the summer heat.
The timely arrival of rain is important for farmers as the kharif sowing season begins. However, people in red-alert districts have been advised to stay cautious, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, due to the risk of flooding and travel disruptions.
