In a major boost to infrastructure and connectivity, the construction of the ten-lane Bengaluru-Pune Expressway has officially begun. This project, known as Vision-47, is set to revolutionize travel between Bengaluru and Pune by reducing the distance by 95 km. Once completed, the 700 km journey will take just 7 hours. Estimated to cost over ₹40,000 crore, this expressway is an alternative to National Highway 4 and forms a part of the ambitious Bharat Mala-2 project.

Transforming Shira and Tumkur District
During the inauguration of the Shira-Amarapur road, MLA T.B. Jayachandra highlighted how this expressway will transform Shira taluk in Tumkur district. The ₹25 crore investment in road development near Togargunte is a sign of progress for the region. Jayachandra emphasized the importance of quality construction and promised additional funding if needed. Currently, three national highways pass through Shira, and the expressway will bring this number to four, further boosting connectivity and development.
The Shira-Amarapur road construction project, worth ₹35 crore, reflects the district's commitment to improving infrastructure. The Bengaluru-Pune Expressway, designed as an eight-lane highway with provisions to expand to ten lanes, will play a vital role in modernizing Tumkur district's transportation network.
### Connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra
The Bengaluru-Pune Expressway will pass through 12 districts, connecting nine districts in Karnataka and three in Maharashtra. Notable locations along the route include Doddaballapur, Nelamangala, Koratagere, Madhugiri, Chitradurga, and Jagalur in Karnataka, and Satara, Sangli, and Pune in Maharashtra. This expansive reach highlights the expressway's potential to improve inter-state travel and foster economic growth.
A 250-meter-wide land acquisition for the expressway underscores the project's large scale. By significantly reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion, the expressway is expected to benefit commuters and businesses alike.
The Bengaluru-Pune Expressway is not just about faster travel; it's a major step toward economic growth. By linking key districts and creating better connectivity, it will open up new opportunities for trade, tourism, and development. The expressway is poised to become a vital connection between Karnataka and Maharashtra, setting new benchmarks in infrastructure development. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is leading the construction, with a target to complete it by 2028.
As construction progresses, residents and businesses eagerly await the completion of this transformative project. The expressway promises to make travel easier, faster, and more efficient, while also driving growth in the regions it touches.
