Bengaluru Bandh Update: Bengaluru formerly known as Banglore is getting ready for a big strike on September 26, 2023. This bandh is organized by different groups of farmers and organizations that support the Kannada language.
They're not happy about the Cauvery River water going to Tamil Nadu, something ordered by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). More than 175 groups, including political parties, transport workers, and business associations, are supporting this strike. It's going to disrupt life and traffic in the city.
During this bandh, getting around the city will be tough as transportation services will be severely impacted. The protesters have said no to buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and most other vehicles. They don't want anyone on the roads unless they're part of the protest. This means buses from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) won't be running. Private taxi services are also likely to stop. However, Namma Metro will still be in operation.
The impact on educational institutions is mixed, with some schools and colleges choosing to remain closed while others remain open. Restaurants and commercial establishments are expected to remain closed throughout the day.
Despite the disruption, emergency services will continue to function, ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens. Police forces and additional security personnel have been deployed across the city to maintain law and order.
The 12-hour bandh is set to begin at 6 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. on September 26. Protesters have planned rallies and demonstrations at key locations, including the Majestic Bus Stand, Kempegowda International Airport, Electronic City, Whitefield, Silk Board Junction, KR Puram, Yeshwanthpur, Peenya, Mysore Road, and Tumkur Road.
The potential impact on metro services remains uncertain, as some metro employees have expressed their support for the bandh. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has not yet made an official announcement regarding metro operations on the day of the bandh.
The state government has issued an appeal to the organizers to reconsider the bandh and engage in dialogue. They have also assured citizens of their safety and security during the bandh, with enhanced police presence at sensitive and strategic locations.
