India's first river terminal is on its way to becoming a reality in Guwahati, Assam, marking a huge leap forward in the country's transportation and logistics sector. The establishment of this terminal holds immense promise for boosting the state's economy by facilitating smoother transportation of goods and passengers. It's part of the government's broader strategy to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.

On May 13, 2022, Assam's Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, kickstarted the construction works on the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG), India's pioneering state-of-the-art river ferry terminal. Funded by the World Bank, this project is poised to revolutionize Assam's waterways. Situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, Guwahati, the largest metropolis in northeastern India, is the chosen location for this groundbreaking terminal.
Designed by India's Ports & Waterways teams, the GGG will offer various amenities, including cafes, a canteen, and accessibility ramps. It promises safe and enjoyable transportation along the river year-round for passengers in Guwahati and nearby river access points, or 'ghats.'

Besides, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled ambitious plans for Guwahati's transformation, emphasizing its pivotal role in enhancing city life. Among these plans is the construction of a modern auditorium in Khanapara, boasting seating for 6,000 people and parking for 1,000 cars. This state-of-the-art facility is set to open in December, marking a significant milestone in Guwahati's cultural and entertainment landscape.
Moreover, the Chief Minister provided updates on crucial infrastructure projects, particularly highlighting the impending completion of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge. This bridge aims to alleviate traffic congestion by linking the city to North Guwahati, facilitating easier travel between the two areas and supporting the expansion of the Guwahati Metropolitan Area to the North Bank of the Brahmaputra River. This significant infrastructure endeavor is poised to enhance connectivity and streamline transportation in the region, addressing long-standing commuting challenges.
Sarma's announcements underscore a strategic vision for Guwahati's development, focusing on bolstering economic growth, improving living standards, and positioning the city as a vibrant urban center. With these ambitious plans and ongoing infrastructure projects, the government is set to propel Guwahati towards a brighter future, solidifying its reputation as a dynamic city for both residents and visitors.
