In a major step to improve rail connectivity in Assam, the Ministry of Railways has approved stoppages for 52 trains at several stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). These new halts will be introduced on an experimental basis.

Additional Train Stoppages in Assam
The decision was taken after a request from Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam. He had asked the Indian Railways to add more stoppages following repeated demands from people in different districts. The new halts will start from an early convenient date and will continue for a trial period. Their continuation will depend on passenger response and how smoothly the operations run.
Tracking of Ticket Bookings
Railway officials have been instructed to track ticket bookings at these stations. They will also promote and publicise the new stoppages so that passengers are aware of them. The Chief Minister's Office said the decision will provide relief to many commuters and improve travel options for thousands of people across the state.
Trains to Stop at Major Stations in Assam
The Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express will now halt at Abhayapuri, while the New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati Vande Bharat Express will stop at Barpeta Road. The Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express will get new halts at Diphu and Tatibahar, and the New Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express will stop at Furkating.
List of Other Trains
The Naharlagun-Guwahati Shatabdi Express will stop at Gohpur, while the SMVT Bengaluru-Agartala Humsafar Express will halt at Chandranathpur and Patharkandi. In addition, trains like the Sealdah-Sabroom Kanchenjunga Express, Delhi-Kamakhya Brahmaputra Mail, Howrah-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express, Dibrugarh-Lalgarh Awadh Assam Express, and Agartala-Anand Vihar Tejas Express will also have new stops at several stations.
How Will this Initiative Help?
The inclusion of premium trains such as Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, Tejas, and Humsafar is expected to benefit smaller towns and rural areas that earlier had limited access to these services. If passenger response remains strong and operations are not affected, the Railway Board may consider making these experimental halts permanent in the future.
