In the wake of rising tensions in the Middle East, several airlines have taken the cautious step of extending their flight suspensions to and from Israel and Lebanon. This decision follows Israel's warning of possible retaliation in response to Iran missile strikes on its territory. Emirates, another major carrier, has responded to the increased tensions by canceling flights to and from Iraq, Iran, and Jordan for Wednesday and Thursday. The Dubai-based airline had previously announced an extension of its flight suspension to and from Beirut until October 8, according to The National. This move reflects the broader aviation industry's cautious stance in light of the ongoing conflicts and their potential implications for regional air travel.
In addition to Emirates, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has also taken significant measures by halting the use of Iranian airspace for all its flights. This decision came shortly after Iran's missile attack on Israel, underscoring the urgent need for airlines to adapt their flight routes to avoid conflict zones. PIA's spokesperson, Athar Awan, stated, "The plans of all flights are being restructured to avoid using Iranian airspace," adding, "Iranian airspace will not be used until the situation becomes clear." The airline utilizes two corridors through Iranian airspace for its flights to destinations such as Canada, Turkey, the UAE, Bahrain, Doha, and Saudi Arabia, necessitating a swift reevaluation of its operational strategies.
Several airlines, including Germany's Lufthansa, the Netherlands' KLM, Emirates, Kuwait Airways, Air Arabia, and many others, have implemented measures.
