Since its acquisition by the Tata Group in January last year, Air India has embarked on a transformative journey aimed at revamping its services and fleet. The introduction of the A350 in January marked a significant milestone in this journey. Notably, the A350 began operating on international routes, first to Dubai in May and then to the Delhi-London (Heathrow) sector on September 1. Air India currently boasts six A350s, with an additional 34 expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2028. This expansion indicates the airline's commitment to enhancing its global connectivity and service quality.

Rajesh Dogra, Air India's chief customer experience officer, highlighted the airline's focus on passenger comfort across both domestic and international routes. The debut of the A350 has notably improved customer perceptions, signaling the direction the "new" Air India is taking. Dogra emphasized the concerted efforts to retrofit old legacy narrow-body aircraft for domestic routes, with completion expected by March next year. This retrofitting aims to elevate the passenger experience significantly.
In line with enhancing in-flight comfort, Air India has also been considering the introduction of four-class cabins (First class, business, premium economy, and economy class) in its A350 aircraft. This move mirrors the airline’s approach to its B777-300 legacy aircraft, which are soon to be retrofitted. Dogra confirmed ongoing discussions with seat suppliers to realize this vision, pending regulatory approvals. This development is part of Air India's broader strategy to offer a differentiated and luxurious flying experience.
The airline's focus isn't limited to hardware upgrades. Plans are underway to introduce Wi-Fi across its international flights, starting with the A350 fleet. Dogra shared that the airline is close to securing the necessary approvals for this service, expected to launch within a month of receiving them. Additionally, Air India is upgrading its flights with enhanced soft products, aiming for implementation on US flights by mid-November and across all international routes by mid-March.
Air India's attention to the pre-boarding experience is evident in its efforts to establish new international lounges, including a major revamp at Delhi's Terminal 3 and new projects in New York and San Francisco, with further expansions planned in Dubai, London, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. These developments highlight Air India's commitment to providing a holistic and premium experience to its passengers.
In the short term, passengers will notice significant improvements aboard Air India flights, including onboard Wi-Fi starting in November, the retrofitting of legacy aircraft, and the introduction of new in-flight entertainment options. This comes as part of a multi-phased transformation aimed at revitalizing the airline. The Tata Group's takeover has also led to the hiring of 9,000 crew members to enhance service quality, demonstrating a commitment to turning Air India into a "world-class global airline with an Indian heart."
The airline has observed a significant increase in the load factor on the A350, especially in the business class, indicating positive passenger reception to the new offerings. Air India's initiatives, such as the temporary introduction of a wireless blue box for content streaming on legacy Boeing flights to the US, underscore its focus on immediate improvements while longer-term upgrades are implemented.
