To ease traffic congestion on Ahmedabad's SP Ring Road, the state government has approved a massive infrastructure upgrade worth ₹2,200 crore. This project will transform the 76-km stretch into a six-lane highway, improving traffic flow and reducing bottlenecks at major junctions.
This initiative also involves rebuilding aging bridges over the Sabarmati River at Bhat and Komod and adding improvements at various busy junctions. The upgrade aims to make commuting smoother by addressing long-standing traffic issues on one of the city's busiest roads.
Enhancing Ahmedabad's Traffic Network
The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has played a crucial role in advancing this project. AUDA's initial report in 2017 suggested six-laning the SP Ring Road, but it was considered unfeasible due to challenges like land acquisition. However, a new consultant company revised the plan, using existing road space to expand to six lanes without acquiring new land. This innovative approach minimizes displacement and environmental impact while ensuring efficient use of resources.
An AUDA official stated, "The updated Detailed Project Report (DPR) has received verbal approval from the state government. The project will utilize the existing space to create six lanes, avoiding the need for new land acquisition."
New Infrastructure and Financial Support
The project includes additional flyovers and improvements to major junctions. The Ognej underpass and Sindhu Bhavan junction flyover have already received financial backing through loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and construction work has begun. As part of the plan, four new underpasses will be constructed at vital intersections, including Aslali, Chiloda, and Bhat, with the location of the fourth underpass yet to be finalized.
Currently, the SP Ring Road has 16 bridges, including two over rivers. With the planned upgrades, the road will feature a total of 34 flyovers and underpasses, drastically improving traffic flow and safety.
