The Kankaria Carnival in Ahmedabad began with a dazzling ceremony, marking the start of the Nagarotsav. Hosted at the iconic Kankaria Lake, this 15th annual celebration featured mesmerizing light and sound shows and a captivating drone display with the theme of a developed India. The event showcases Ahmedabad's rich heritage while celebrating its journey toward progress.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister spoke about Kankaria Lake's transformation from a simple zoo, previously known as Lake Kantha, into a vibrant cultural hub. This rejuvenation, initiated in 2006 by then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi, has made Kankaria a prime destination for community gatherings and cultural events.
Major Development Projects Launched
Alongside the carnival, 34 urban development projects worth ₹868 crores were announced. These projects include the construction of 345 houses in Naroda, new gymnasiums and gardens, and the development of a sewage treatment plant (STP). These initiatives aim to improve public facilities and infrastructure, reflecting the government's commitment to urban growth and citizen welfare.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of the carnival, stating, "Nagarotsav has been celebrated at Kankaria for 15 years." This event combines cultural festivities with the unveiling of modern development projects, representing a balance between tradition and progress.
Highlights of the Week-Long Festival
Scheduled from March 25 to March 31, 2024, this ₹6-crore festival is organized by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and promises a rich mix of activities for all age groups. Mornings will include yoga, pranayama, and meditation, while afternoons will feature aerobics and Zumba sessions. Evenings will come alive with performances ranging from traditional dances like Garba and Raas to contemporary music shows by artists like Dave and the Rabari Band.
The festival also offers stand-up comedy by Desai, engaging storytelling, and diro performances. Competitions in singing, dancing, music, and comedy provide platforms for local talent to shine. Families can enjoy life-size board games, puppet shows, workshops, and a dedicated selfie court.
A Carnival for Everyone
The event ensures visitor safety with first-aid stations, childcare facilities, surveillance, and helpful staff. Food lovers can indulge in local and international delicacies at a dedicated food zone. At the scenic Sabarmati Riverfront, visitors can enjoy rides, including a Ferris wheel, train, and inflatable park, creating a festive atmosphere.
