Metro services are expected to extend to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, bringing more convenience and connectivity for travelers. Following metro links to airports in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, Ahmedabad will soon join the list, enhancing travel options for its residents and visitors. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is leading this project and has already submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the central government for approval.
This proposed metro link to the Ahmedabad airport is part of Phase-2B of the metro expansion, a project eagerly awaited by locals. A senior GMRC official confirmed that the plan has reached the final stages and is awaiting approval from the central government. The project aims to be a collaborative effort between the central and state governments, with a construction budget of around ₹1800 crore.
The new metro corridor will stretch approximately 6 km, designed to make daily travel smoother for an estimated 35,000 passengers. This route will connect travelers directly to various parts of the city, linking the airport to key locations like the Narendra Modi Stadium through stations at Koteshwar and Koba. The route also includes an underground segment near the airport, spanning about 1 km, to handle any challenges and make the journey seamless for passengers.
The metro's expansion to the airport is part of Ahmedabad's broader development plan, which began with Phase-1 of the metro project in September 2022. Phase-1 cost around ₹12,700 crore and covers multiple areas across the city, though a portion of the route between Thaltej and Thaltej Gam remains under construction. Phase-2, costing ₹5384 crore, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September, covering 28 km, with 21 km of it already operational.
The metro link to Ahmedabad airport is a crucial milestone for the city.
