Survey Report: 91% of Indians Worried About Global Warming, Urges Action and Awareness

In a recent survey conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and CVoter International, a significant concern about global warming among the Indian population has been highlighted.

Indians Concerned About Global Warming Survey Reveals

The study, 'Climate Change in the Indian Mind, 2023', showcases that a vast majority, 91%, are worried about the effects of global warming, with 59% expressing they are "very worried". Despite the high levels of concern, 54% of participants admitted to knowing just a little or having never heard of global warming before the survey.

This gap in awareness did not, however, hinder the strong support for proactive measures against climate change, with 86% backing the Indian government's 'Net Zero' commitment aimed at reducing carbon pollution to nearly zero by 2070.

The data reveals a pressing call for action and awareness within India. While only 10% claim to know "a lot" about global warming, 78% recognized its occurrence after being provided with a basic definition. This acknowledgment extends to its impacts, with 71% and 76% of people observing changes in local weather and monsoons respectively due to global warming.

Findings of the Survey:

  • 86% support the Indian government's 'Net Zero' commitment to reduce India's carbon pollution to nearly zero by 2070
  • 54% of people in India say they know either "just a little" about global warming or have never heard of it, while only 10% say they know "a lot."
  • However, when given a short definition of global warming and how it affects weather patterns, 78% of people in India say they think global warming is happening.
  • 52% think global warming is caused mostly by human activities, while 38% think it is caused mostly by natural changes in the environment.
  • Majorities think global warming affects weather in their local area (71%) and monsoons in India (76%) either "a lot" or "some."
  • 33% say they hear about global warming in the media at least once a week.
  • 67% say leaving most of India's coal in the ground is the best pathway to a healthy, safe, and prosperous future for India
  • 61% think India should increase its use of renewable sources of energy, while only 14% think India should increase its use of fossil fuels.
  • 74% think that overall, taking action to reduce global warming will either improve economic growth and provide new jobs
Indians Concerned About Global Warming Survey Reveals

Support for government initiatives to combat climate change is overwhelming. Aside from the 'Net Zero' goal, 67% of respondents view leaving coal in the ground as the best strategy for a sustainable future. Additionally, there's strong advocacy for the shift towards renewable energy, with 84% favoring the cessation of new coal power plants in favor of solar and wind energy sources. Interestingly, 74% believe that action on global warming could either positively impact economic growth and job creation (51%) or have no effect (23%), contradicting the concern that environmental policies might hinder economic progress.

Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz of Yale University pointed out, "India is already experiencing climate impacts, from record heatwaves to severe floods to stronger storms." This reality makes the high levels of concern and willingness to support governmental action understandable. Dr. Jagadish Thaker of the University of Queensland further emphasized Indian citizens' strong support for clean energy transition, highlighting the perceived benefits for the economy and public health.

At the global stage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call at COP26 for a mass movement towards 'Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE)' echoes the sentiments of the Indian public. The survey indicates a readiness among Indians to embrace significant lifestyle changes to protect the environment, with 79% willing to make substantial adjustments in their daily lives. Similarly, proactive measures like encouraging environment-friendly actions among peers and public demonstrations are supported by 78% and 71% of respondents, respectively.

This survey, conducted over September and October 2023 with 2,178 Indian adults, illuminates a strong public consensus on the urgent need for climate action. Despite a gap in detailed knowledge about global warming, there's a clear understanding of its impacts and a widespread willingness to support both governmental initiatives and personal lifestyle changes to combat climate change.
