2024 Henley Index: India's Passport Ranking Drops To 82nd Position, Singapore Leads

The 2024 Henley Passport Index ranks India's passport 82nd globally, providing visa-free access to 58 countries.

The Henley Passport Index has unveiled its 2024 ranking, placing India's passport at the 82nd position globally. This ranking allows Indian passport holders to travel to 58 countries without needing a visa. Compared to last year, India has dropped two places from its previous 80th rank.

Singapore has reclaimed its position as the world's most powerful passport in the 2024 index. Its citizens can travel visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access to an impressive 195 countries. France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Japan follow closely behind, all tied for second place with access to 192 countries.

India's Passport Performance Over the Years

India's passport performance has seen significant fluctuations over the years. In 2014, India was ranked 76th with access to 52 countries. The following year saw a sharp decline to the 88th position with visa-free access to just 51 nations. The rankings for subsequent years were as follows:

  • 2015: 88th
  • 2016: 85th
  • 2017: 87th
  • 2018: 81st
  • 2019: 82nd
  • 2020: 82nd
  • 2021: 81st

The Henley Passport Index compiles its data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It serves as a comprehensive resource for assessing global travel privileges. For nearly two decades, it has tracked travel freedoms across 227 countries and territories worldwide using real-time updates and exclusive data from IATA.

Top Performers in the Henley Passport Index

Apart from Singapore, other top performers include Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden. These countries round out the top three positions by providing entry to 191 destinations.

The United Kingdom, New Zealand, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland share the fourth spot with significant travel opportunities. Australia and Portugal are tied for fifth place. Meanwhile, the United States has slipped to eighth place with visa-free access to 186 countries.

The Henley Passport Index highlights varying degrees of global mobility offered by different national passports. This reflects international diplomatic relations and travel agreements. Notably, Pakistan's passport is ranked at the 100th position with access to only 33 countries. Afghanistan occupies the last place with visa-free entry to just 26 destinations.

This index serves as a vital tool for understanding global mobility trends and how they evolve over time due to changes in visa policies and international relations.
