Sir Kailasanathar is possibly one of the oldest surviving temples. It is believed to be around 2000 years old but is said to have been reconstructed during the eighth century by the Pallava rulers. It is located opposite the famous Ammaiyar Temple.
The temple was reconstructed in parts during the time of French rule. The temple is dedicated to Lord Kailasanathar and Goddess Soundrambal. The most attractive part of the temple is perhaps the four elaborate doorways. The entrance of the shrine of Subramaniar faces the doorway to the west.
