Chausath Yogini Temple, Jabalpur

2

Chausath Yogini Temple in Jabalpur is yet another place that adds to the historic fervour of the city. Located near the famous Marble Rocks in Jabalpur, Chausath Yogini Temple houses idols of 64 attendants of Goddess Durga. The hallmark of the temple is the idol of Lord Shiva at the centre, which is surrounded by the idols of the female goddess.

Built around 1000 AD by the Kalachuri dynasty, this temple was destroyed by the Mughals during their invasion. The remains of the idols are immaculately carved and showcase marvellous iconography in spite of being disfigured due to the invasion.

An inscription commemorating the visit of Rani Durgavati can be seen at the sanatorium. There is also an underground tunnel connecting Chausath Yogini Temple and Gond queen Durgavati's palace. Chausath Yogini Temple, which is a huge complex and spells sheer splendour in every nook and corner of the structure, is highly recommended on a visit to Jabalpur.
