1. The Queen's Penance:
Once, the king of Orchha, Madhukar Shah, loved Lord Krishna, but his queen, Ganesh Kunwari, was devoted to Lord Rama. The king wanted to go to Mathura, Lord Krishna's birthplace, but the queen wished to visit Ayodhya, Lord Rama's birthplace. The king agreed but with a condition - she must bring back Lord Rama as a child.
The queen went to Ayodhya and meditated for 21 days. Lord Rama, pleased with her devotion, agreed to go with her, but he set two conditions: he would only travel as an idol, and he would stay where first placed on the ground. The queen accepted and carried the idol in a basket. While resting in Orchha, she unknowingly placed the basket on the palace ground. When she tried to lift it, the basket wouldn't budge.
The king learned of this miracle, realizing Lord Rama had chosen their palace. Although the king planned the Chaturbhuj temple, the idol refused to move. So, the palace became the temple, and Lord Rama became the king of Orchha.
2. The King's Dream:
King Madhukar Shah dreamt of Lord Rama asking him to install his idol in the palace. Following the dream, the king brought the idol from Ayodhya, planning to later move it to the Chaturbhuj temple. However, the idol stuck to the palace ground. Understanding it was Lord Rama's wish, the king turned the palace into a temple, declaring Lord Rama as the king of Orchha.
3. The Stolen Idol:
Another tale tells of King Madhukar Shah's devotion to Lord Rama. Wanting a beautiful idol, the king sent his minister to Ayodhya. The minister found a magnificent idol but the priest refused to give it. The minister secretly stole the idol, keeping it in the palace. When the king came, the idol vanished. A voice from the palace declared it was Lord Rama, blessing Orchha. Overjoyed, the king made the palace a temple, honoring Lord Rama as Raja Ram, the king of Orchha.
