February 2023 will see the launch of 2 new Vande Bharat Express trains connecting Mumbai to Shirdi Mumbai to Solapur. On February 10th, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the trains on his visit to Mumbai. With this, Maharashtra will become the first state in India to receive 2 intra-state Vande Bharat Express trains on the country's two steepest ghats.
Between Mumbai to Solapur, a distance of about 400 kilometers, the Vande Bharat Express is anticipated to travel in 6.35 hours. The train will probably pass by the Bhor ghat which is located between Karjat & Khandala on way to Pune. Between Lonavala and Solapur, the train's top speed will be 110 kph.
In contrast, it is anticipated that the second Mumbai-Shirdi Vande Bharat train will travel 340 kilometres in just 5.25 hours. The Thal ghat (near Kasara, on the outskirts of Mumbai) is most likely where it will pass. Between Igatpuri and Punatamba, the train will travel at a top speed of 110 kilometres per hour.

What is new?
The Vande Bharat Express has been upgraded to create the two trains as they can accelerate to faster speeds in a shorter amount of time and are significantly lighter. The Kavach-compatible trains have the locally created Automatic Train Protection system installed.
When a driver is unable to control the locomotive within the speed restriction, the system activates the train braking mechanism to prevent collisions between two trains. Maharashtra's ghats are well known for their uneven topography.
Without assistance from the additional engines that typically push trains in high terrain from the rear, these trains will traverse the hilly incline. The installation of parking brakes will prevent trains from rolling back as they pass the slope.
