The Jammu-Srinagar national highway reopened for traffic after being briefly closed due to mudslides and shooting stones caused by heavy rains. The closure had affected several key points along the route. "The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed in the last day in view of heavy rains that triggered mudslides at Hingni and intermittent shooting stones at Mehad, Panthiyal, T2, and Kishtwari Pather," said Rohit Baskotra, SSP Highway.

Weather Conditions and Forecast
The Meteorological Department reported that Jammu received 112 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Other areas like Reasi, Katra, and Udhampur recorded 74.5 mm, 72.9 mm, and 32.2 mm respectively.
From August 8 to 10, scattered rain and thundershowers are expected. There is a possibility of intense showers leading to flash floods, cloud bursts, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas of J&K.
Rohit Baskotra mentioned that machinery and personnel were deployed immediately to clear the mud from the highway. "The vehicles, due to slippery conditions, are moving at a snail's pace, but the highway is open," he added.
Upcoming Weather Predictions
The weather will remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected in many places across Kashmir and Jammu Divisions until August 5. On August 6 and 7, scattered rain and thundershowers are predicted for Kashmir Division while fairly widespread rain is expected in Jammu Division.
The reopening of the highway is crucial for maintaining connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Despite the slow-moving traffic due to slippery roads, efforts are ongoing to ensure safe travel for all vehicles on this vital route.
The authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely to respond promptly to any further disruptions caused by adverse weather events.
