Game Changer in the Hills: Ropeway to Connect Dehradun and Mussoorie
Dehradun is all set to become home to India's longest ropeway that will connect the city with Mussoorie, a beautiful hill station in Uttarakhand. The ropeway work has already begun by Mussoorie Sky Car Company Pvt. Ltd., a consortium led by FIL Industries Private Ltd and comprising POMA SAS France and SRM Engineering LLP.

India's hill stations are known for their scenic beauty, but often the journey to reach them can be time-consuming, especially when it comes to negotiating hilly terrain. The picturesque hill station of Mussoorie, nestled in the lap of Uttarakhand, has long been a favorite escape for travelers from across the country.
However, reaching Mussoorie from the nearby city of Dehradun can be a bit of an ordeal due to the serpentine roads and the traffic that often clogs them. But this is all set to change with the construction of India's longest ropeway that will connect Dehradun with Mussoorie, significantly reducing travel time and congestion.
The Mussoorie Sky Car Company Pvt. Ltd., a consortium led by FIL Industries Private Ltd in partnership with POMA SAS France and SRM Engineering LLP, has embarked on this ambitious project. Owais Altaf Syed, Group Director of FIL Industries Limited, expressed his excitement, saying, "We are very excited to launch this mega ropeway project in the state of Uttarakhand, FIL Industries' second ropeway project in India, after our very successfully running Skyview by Empyrean project in Patnitop, Jammu."
This innovative project, known as the Mussoorie-Dehradun sustainable ropeway, will not only serve as a tourist attraction but also provide a sustainable mode of urban mobility for the residents. It aims to combine modern infrastructure with tourism and local economic development to boost the economies of both Dehradun and Mussoorie.
Once completed, this ropeway will be a game-changer for the region. Stretching over a length of more than 5.5 km, it is touted as India's longest ropeway system. It will operate with 10-seater cabins, a first of its kind in the country. These cabins will be fully enclosed and ventilated, offering passengers a comfortable and scenic ride. With automatic doors for convenience, each cabin will have the capacity to carry up to 1,300 passengers per hour in each direction.
One of the most significant advantages of this ropeway is the dramatic reduction in travel time between Dehradun and Mussoorie. Currently, the journey can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic conditions. With the ropeway in operation, this travel time will be slashed to a mere 15 minutes, providing a quick and efficient means of transportation.
The estimated cost of this mono-cable ropeway project is around Rs 300 crore. The benefits it offers are twofold: it will not only provide swift and convenient transport but also greatly reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak festive seasons when traffic can become unmanageable. This all-weather ropeway will operate year-round, making it a reliable mode of transportation.
Besides its functionality, the project is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local economy. The integration of infrastructure development will include provisions for hospitality, food and beverage services, and retail facilities. These additions are anticipated to attract tourists and boost the local economies of both Dehradun and Mussoorie.
With the ropeway project already underway and set to be completed by September 2026, it promises to be a major development for the region. The modern and convenient 10-seater cabins, coupled with the reduction in travel time, will make it a popular choice for both residents and tourists.
This ropeway is expected to not only transform transportation but also boost local businesses and tourism, contributing significantly to the state's GDP. The infrastructure and ease of access will make Dehradun and Mussoorie even more accessible and enjoyable destinations for travelers.
