A sudden cloudburst in the upper regions of the Kheer Ganga river has unleashed a devastating flash flood in Dharali village, situated in Uttarkashi district.
The calamity has claimed at least four lives, with several people still reported missing. The flood has caused widespread destruction, damaging homes and crippling local infrastructure.
District Magistrate Prashant Arya confirmed the fatalities and described the situation as extremely serious. "A major flash flood has impacted the area. We are currently assessing the extent of loss to life and property," Arya stated. Rescue efforts are underway, with multiple agencies deployed to carry out relief and recovery operations.
Rescue Efforts and Government Response
The Indian Army, along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), has been deployed to carry out intensive search and rescue operations in the affected area. Support has also been mobilized from local tehsil offices and the Public Works Department (PWD), with all teams working tirelessly to locate survivors and assist those impacted by the disaster.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to discuss the severe aftermath of the cloudburst in Dharali. He has instructed the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and NDRF to ramp up their relief operations, stressing the importance of swift and efficient disaster response.
Impact on Local Infrastructure
The flash flood has wreaked havoc across Dharali village, causing severe destruction to homes, businesses, and essential roadways. Shocking visuals show the forceful torrent tearing through the area, toppling structures and scattering debris in its wake. Preliminary reports indicate that multiple hotels and guesthouses have been completely wiped out.
Beyond the tragic loss of human lives, the disaster has also affected local livelihoods. In the Banala Patti region of Barkot tehsil, nearly 18 goats were carried away by the surging Kud Gadhera stream, adding to the anguish of villagers who rely on livestock for their sustenance and income.
Weather Warnings and Ongoing Rescue Efforts
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for continued heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand until August 10. The hill districts are expected to bear the brunt of these intense downpours, potentially worsening flood conditions and posing challenges for ongoing rescue missions.
Rescue units have been deployed from Harsil and Bhatwari to support those possibly trapped under rubble or isolated by rising waters. The immediate focus remains on locating the missing and ensuring their safety, despite the adverse weather.
