Several important rivers and their tributaries run through the Chamoli district. Alaknanda, covering a distance of 229 km, is the main river here, which forms the confluence of the Bhagirathi and the Ganges, at Devprayag.
History of Chamoli
Chamoli, a former part of the Garhwal district was carved as a separate revenue district in 1960. To know the history of Chamoli we need to look back to the 6th century A.D. Chamoli was under the rule of king Bhanu Pratap. from 1803 ( this was the year when a devastating earthquake shook the region) till 1815 the Gorkha took over and ruled the kingdom. after that Chamoli got new rulers in the Britishers. Finally, in 1997, Chamoli district was carved out as a separate district from Pauri Garhwal.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rishikesh, situated 202 km from Chamoli. Well connected by roads, Taxis, and buses are frequently available from Rishikesh station. Even from Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and many other destinations are also connected by road to Chamoli.
By Road: Chamoli is situated on NH58 and that's how accessible by roads from major destinations of Uttarakhand state. From ISBT Kashmiri Gate tourists can take a bus to Rishikesh and Srinagar. The climate of Chamoli depends on the altitude that ranges from 800 m to 8,000 m sea level. The winter season remains from November to March which records the lowest temperature of 0 °C.
