The arrival of summer makes us want to retreat to a quiet and cool hill. Given that children have their vacations during that time, a relaxing trip is quite becoming of any family. The nature spread on hills make it a perfect summer destination.
There are quite a few hill stations in South India, thanks to the Western and Eastern Ghats. Ooty, Munnar, Agumbe, Chikmagalur, Kodaikanal and Coorg are some of the many popular hill stations in South India. One such beautiful but lesser known hill station is Yercaud in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. It is situated less than 360 km from Chennai and only 228 km from Bangalore.

Part of Shevroys range of hills in Eastern Ghats, Yercaud is situated 4970 ft above sea level. The peak point of the Yercaud hill is the Servarayan temple.

The beautiful lake adorning the hill and forest area gives it the name Yercaud. The place is connected to Salem via National Highway 28.

The weather at Yercaud is at its moderate best. The temperature never goes above 29 degree celcius and never goes below 13 degree celcius. Hence, citrus fruits and coffee planations find an ideal land at Yercaud.

5 km from the Yercaud Lake, in Servarayan hills was found implements belonging to the Stone-age. Hence, Yercaud makes for an interesting place for archeoligists and historians as well.

The erstwhile governor of Madras Presidency, Sir Thomas Munroe is said to have discovered this place. Following which David Cockburn, the Scottish collector later to be the 'Father of Yercaud' introduced the cultivation of coffee, pears and apple.
