According to the Henley Passport Index for 2023, a list of the world's largest and most powerful passports has been made public. Based on the information provided by the International Air Transport Association, Henley & Partners, a global citizenship and residence advisory company with offices in London, has compiled this list.

Every year, Henley & Partners, a global citizenship and residency advice organization with offices in London, publishes an inventory of the most powerful passports in existence.

For the 5th year in a row, Japan has the most powerful passports in the world. Japan's visa-free or visa-on-arrival policy gives its people access to 193 nations, or 85% of the world's countries, making the Japanese passport the strongest in the world.

Asiatic nations have topped the list published by the Henley Passport Index for the year 2023, with Japan taking the top spot, followed by Singapore & South Korea in second place, and the European nations, Germany and Spain in third place.

Powerful Passports

Passport holders from both Singapore and South Korea are eligible for visa-free travel to 192 nations. While citizens of Germany and Spain can travel to 190 countries without a visa. Finland, Italy, & Luxembourg are tied for fourth place with 189 countries that do not require a visa. While Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden secured the fifth spot, allowing citizens of those nations to travel visa-free to 188 other nations.

Afghanistan, whose citizens are permitted to travel to 27 other countries, is at the bottom of the Index and can freely travel to only 27 nations. The second & third worst passports to own, respectively, were those from Iraq and Syria.

Where is its position of India in the Passport ranking?

In the last two years, India has climbed five positions on the Henley Passport Index, which classifies passports based on how many countries its holders can visit without a prior visa.

This year, India moved up to position 85, and its citizens no longer require a visa to enter 59 other nations. India was placed 90th in 2021 & 85th position in 2022, respectively.
In 59 countries and territories, including Bhutan, Macao, Indonesia, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Thailand, etc. Bearers of Indian passports are not required to get a visa whereas certain destinations also offer visas on arrival for Indian Passport holders.
