What is Western Disturbance?

It develops when the Himalayas and western parts of central Asia contact with the jet stream, a fast air current in the upper atmosphere. This interaction causes a low-pressure area to arise, which in turn causes the disturbance to develop.

A Western Disturbance's propensity to bring precipitation to the places it affects is its main characteristic. Depending on the temperature and elevation of the area, it frequently produces rain, snow, or a mix of the two. Winter weather on the Indian subcontinent is significantly influenced by the Western Disturbance. It brings much-needed precipitation and snowfall or rainfall to northern India's Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab state when it enters the area.

Western Disturbances affect weather patterns in various ways besides just precipitation. They frequently produce temperature drops, which result in cold waves and frigid conditions in the impacted areas. Additionally, they have an impact on wind patterns, which can occasionally result in dust storms and gusty winds in particular regions.

Damage Caused by Western Disturbance

Flooding: The Western Disturbance's excessive precipitation is one of the main causes of concern. Rainfall can occasionally be very intense, causing landslides and flash floods as a result. Infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and human settlements may all suffer serious harm as a result of these unexpected downpours.

The combination of high-speed winds and heavy rainfall at higher elevations frequently causes road closures, flight delays, and power outages.

Current monsoon condition in North India:

• On July 11, 2023, the rain in north India decreased in some areas as it poured down in others, leaving hundreds of people trapped and at least seven more dead wherein the situation keeps getting worse.
• From the plains of Rajasthan to the hills of Himachal Pradesh, violent floods occurred across towns, villages, and farms. As a result of the extensive damage caused by the three days of constant rain, the state administrations increased their relief and rescue efforts in the damaged areas.

• The worst-hit state, Himachal Pradesh, has reported a maximum of 31 fatalities. Shimla, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur all have flash flood warnings. Highways that are blocked are being cleared, and stranded individuals are being rescued.
• The IMD has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand because landslides have continued to impede the national highways that connect Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Badrinath.
• Yamuna has reached the 206-meter danger line in Delhi, forcing residents of flood-prone neighborhoods to move to safer areas. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court overturned a six-month-old NGT decision designating the Delhi LG as the head of a powerful panel charged with monitoring the implementation of action plans to clean the Yamuna.
• This occurs while Yamuna continues to be gravely polluted despite the government spending more than Rs 1,500 crore.
