Vagamon: Places to See

Vagamon is a hill station that lies in the border of Kottayam and Idukki district of Kerala.It is a tourist hot spot due to the lush green plains, blue hills, meandering rivers, gushing waterfalls, fresh and breezy air and the deep pine forest. Thangal Hill, Murugan Hill and Kurisumala ornate the small town with their natural beauty. One can go for rock climbing, trekking, mountaineering and paragliding here. Also if you not adventurous, you can sit back and admire the breathtaking surroundings and marvel at the variety of flowers and orchids that are found here. Vagamon is often called the ‘Scotland of Asia' and truly is a breathtaking place. Here are a few tourist places one should visit in Vagamon.

How to Reach

How to Reach

The nearest airport to Vagamon is the Cochin International Airport which is a two hours ride. It is connected to all the major metro cities. One can travel here by train as well with the nearest train station being Kuttikanam. There are buses from Bangalore, Hydrabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi that come here as well.

Kurisumala Hill

Kurisumala Hill

Kurisumala Hill also known as the "Mountain of the Holy Cross" is an important pilgrimage spot for the Christians in Vagamon. The hill is enveloped with verdant green tea gardens and thick forests on each side that make the hill more appealing. People from far and near come here for trekking, camping and paragliding.

Kurisumala Ashram
 

Kurisumala Ashram

Kurisumala Ashram stands high on the Kurisumala hill. It is visited by pilgrims of all religions and races. Good Friday is celebrated here with grandeur. During this time, the pilgrims carry a holy wooden cross and climb the hill. The ashram is also known for its generosity: it feeds many hungry mouths every day. Moreover, the Kurisumala Ashram does not permit food to be wasted by its residents and guests.

Murugan Para

Murugan Para

Murugan Para lies around 8 km away from the Vagamon hill station. Murugan Para is a temple cut out from rocks and is devoted to Lord Murugan. It lies on the eastern side of Kurisumala Hill. Every year, Murugan Para is visited by hundreds of devotees. According to some widely popular opinions, these carvings date back to the Stone Age.

Suicide Point

Suicide Point

Vagamon also has a suicide point called Moonpara. It is a V-shaped gorge and is one of the beautiful locations in Vagamon. One can see the deep-seated valley below from here. Though trekking to the suicide point is a bit of strenuous activity, it is a wonderful experience too as the way to the summit is very pleasing and enchanting. Just a piece of advise and that is to not take the places name seriously.

Thangal Para

Thangal Para

Thangal Para is another remarkable tourist attraction in Vagamon. It is famous for being a pilgrimage centre for the Muslims. There is a big spherical rock where lies the tomb of Sheikh Fariduddin. Every year thousands of devotees visit this place during the Urs festival. One is taken back in time as one explores this mystical place.

Vagamon Falls

Vagamon Falls is a small stream that springs up at a lake. The route to the fall is popular among the trekkers. What makes this waterfall of Vagamon distinct from others is not the height but the breathtaking view that encompasses it.

Vagamon Lake

The Vagamon Lake is a picturesque place. The hills at the backdrop enhances the beauty of the lake. While visiting, come here to unwind by going for a boat ride on this lake. One can also take a stroll beside the lake and enjoy the mesmerising landscape. The Vagamon Lake is a beautiful place for picnics, outing and other leisure activities.
