Kolkata Metro's Kavi Subhash Station: Empty Trains will Start Reversing from January 2027

Empty Metro trains are expected to start reversing at Kavi Subhash, known as New Garia Metro station, from January 2027, the southern terminus of Kolkata Metro's Blue Line. The move is expected to improve train operations and may allow Metro Railway to add a few services during peak hours.

Under the proposed arrangement, a train from Dakshineswar will drop its last passengers at Shahid Khudiram station, which serves as the southern terminus currently. The empty train will then travel to Kavi Subhash, switch tracks there and begin its return journey towards Dakshineswar.

Metro officials said this arrangement could help improve operational headway. If everything goes as planned, a couple of additional trains could be operated during peak hours.

Commercial services at Kavi Subhash were suspended on July 28, 2025, after cracks were found in the platform-supporting pillars. The damage was linked to soil subsidence following heavy rainfall. The Dakshineswar-bound platform is now being demolished and rebuilt, along with parts of the roof and supporting structures.

The demolition work is almost complete, after which reconstruction will begin. The rebuilt platform will have a reinforced design with additional underground piles, columns and stronger structural support. Officials said the work is being carried out with safety as the priority and is expected to take at least another year to complete.
Once Kavi Subhash becomes operational again, the crossover point at Shahid Khudiram will no longer be required. Shahid Khudiram has been serving as the southern terminus since July 29, 2025.

The closure of Kavi Subhash has affected commuters, as the station provides connections to the Orange Line and New Garia suburban railway station. The absence of a train-reversal facility at Shahid Khudiram had also affected Metro schedules. A reversal point was installed there at the end of May 2026, allowing demolition work at New Garia to progress.
