The Reed Flute Cave: Well-Known Tourist Attraction in Guilin, China

One of southern China's, and Guilin's most well-known attractions for more than 1200 years is the Reed Flute Cave, a natural cave that was sculpted out of karst limestone peaks over millions of years. The lush reeds that grow outside and can be fashioned into musical flutes are the source of the cave's name.

The amazing Reed Flute Cave is around 790 feet (240 meters) long. Along with its length, the height of the roof also varies significantly from place to place. The cave is also the location of several, magnificent stalactite and stalagmite collections. These were created over thousands of years by carbonate deposition.

The Reed Flute Cave History and Formation:

Since the earth's layer of limestone bedrock was worn away by water erosion 180 million years ago, numerous stalagmites, stone pillars, stalactites, & stone flags have formed. Water seeped into the limestone bedrock fissures as they developed, forming drainage networks that later developed into full-fledged caverns, like Reed Flute Cave.

Intriguingly, there are many stalactites and stalagmites that have names like Crystal Palace, Dragon Pagoda, & Fish Tail Peak, based on their appearance and the mythology that surround them. A glimpse of a medieval Chinese equivalent to graffiti can be seen in the calligraphy inscriptions on the cave walls, which are primarily poetry and travelogues from 8th century Travellers of the Tang Dynasty.

The locals used the Reed Flute Cave as a hideout and sanctuary during the Sino-Japanese conflict, making it an important location. Hospitals and newspapers were run from the protection of the cave, which was unaffected by the Japanese bombing.

2) The cave is 240 metres long, although the total distance travelled during a tour can be 500 metres.
3) The profusion of reed that is conspicuous near the cave entrance and has been used to make flutes and pipes inspired the name "Reed Flute Cave."
4) One of the numerous amazing formations in the cave even has a striking similarity to "the Statue of Liberty" in the United States.
5) Before being rediscovered by a group of refugees running from the Japanese army in the 1940s, the cave was all but ignored for a thousand years.
