Traveling during a heatwave can be a challenging and potentially dangerous experience if not approached with care. Heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion & heatstroke are more likely to occur as temperatures rise.

While travelling during a heatwave, it's essential that you follow some simple dos and don'ts mentioned below to guarantee a safe and pleasurable vacation.

DO Drink Enough Water-

Dehydration is your worst enemy during a heatwave because it can lead to heat exhaustion, which is the most common cause of death or severe illness from the sun on vacation. If your body gets dehydrated from sweating, it increases your chances of passing out at an inopportune time.

Hence, pay attention to how much water you are drinking. You can also have some fresh juice while roaming around the world.

Heatwaves: Dos and Donts

DON'T Drink Alcohol-

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, as they can dehydrate you even further. Alcohol use during a heat wave might raise the risk of dehydration and ailments brought on by the heat.

In addition to impairing judgement, alcohol can make it more difficult to spot the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. It's best to avoid alcohol altogether when traveling in hot and humid climates.

DO Utilize Air-Conditioned Spaces-

Stay inside if you can during the warmest hours of the day, which are typically from 11 am to 4 pm. During your summer vacation, always opt for a stay which has air conditioning because the weather is not clearly appropriate for without AC stays.

If your accommodations don't have air conditioning, look for public places with air conditioning, such as malls, libraries, or museums. Close the blinds or curtains when you are inside to keep the sun's rays out.

DON'T Ignore Warning Signs-

Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which include dizziness, a racing heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and fainting. Get emergency medical treatment if you encounter any of these symptoms. Warning indicators shouldn't be disregarded because they can soon turn into a life-threatening situation.

DO Plan for Water Activities-

Water activities can cool you off and help you control your body temperature. During a heat wave, swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking are excellent options for staying cool. Never swim alone and always swim within your swimming abilities.

Take a cold shower or bath before bedtime to help you sleep better. Your body temperature can be lowered and the heat can be relieved by taking a cool shower or bath.

DON'T Overexert Yourself-

Overexertion can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke, which can be life-threatening. Avoid engaging in outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm, when it's the hottest of the day.

Instead, schedule your activities for late afternoon or early morning when it is cooler. If you must be outside during the hottest time of the day, take frequent breaks, look for shelter, and get plenty of rest with water.

DO Use Sunscreen-

When travelling during a heatwave, sunscreen is essential. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays. All exposed skin, including your face, neck, and ears, should receive a liberal application of good-quality sunscreen.

Reapply at least once every two hours, or more often if you are swimming or sweating. It's crucial to protect your skin from sunburn because it can raise the risk of illnesses brought on by the heat.

DON'T Underestimate the Sun's Power-

The sun's rays can still induce sunburn and heatstroke even in cloudy conditions. Wear sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and light, loose clothing that protects your arms and legs. Remember to wear breathable, comfy shoes to protect your feet.

Do check the weather before you leave home! Whether you're flying or driving, check for weather warnings and advisories ahead of time.
